EMPTY is an artistic venture which seeks to utilize 12 vacated sites in Manhattan that were affected by the current economic crisis and transform them for the month of October into alternative art spaces. The exhibition has been conceived in the manner of an integrated project with curators, artists and communities working together to create something socially relevant outside the traditional art setting. We are committed within the individual projects to sustainability, community, social responsibility and awareness all linked by projects of high artistic quality and innovation. |
Curated by Manon Slome and Asher Remy-Toledo The proposed exhibition and project, EMPTY, is intended to highlight the transformative power of artistic vision through an interrelated series of installations, video works, sculpture, photography, painting, sound art and performance, installed not in traditional gallery or museum settings but in empty spaces around Manhattan. These vacated architectural sites -storefronts, office, and other commercial spaces - will become the enticing sites for challenging and thought provoking work, revitalizing and beckoning a new form of energy to the city. The selected sites will no longer be Empty – but spaces full of creativity, suggesting new paradigms of community art, not separated from the public by institutional walls and barriers to entry.

Remy Toledo brings together curators from six international institutions to participate in the first edition of the New Media Lounge at Art Miami. Each of the six institutions contributes a work of art that is either a part of their permanent collection or has been exhibited in their space. The artists are Sigalit Landau (Israel) presented by CCA, Zhang Xiaotao (China) presented by Iberia Center, Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson (UK) presented by FACT, Bjorn Melhus (Germany) presented by PAN and Feng Mengbo (China) presented by the Ullens Foundation. The Cisneros Foundation presents together four artists from Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. Teresa Diehl presented by Manon Slome. All of the selected artworks in this Media Lounge involve technology and all propose new ideas that represent how technology is embedded in this particular time of human history. The curators for each institution presented proposals that address contemporary issues that deal with our humanity and our vulnerability. Chief Curator: Asher Remy Toledo

Public Viewing is an art intervention in the everyday culture of public spaces. It turns up in poetic and disconcerting ways in places where one least expects art, for instance in pedestrian precincts, department stores and events. On account of its unexpectedness, the intervention questions perceptions of familiar spaces, thereby creating a new awareness. Public Viewing analyses, comments and illustrates. At the same time, this art intervention by Littmann Cultureprojects, Basel, Switzerland, explores the boundaries between art and everyday life, penetrating the monopoly of promotional aesthetics in the public arena. |
